The Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing performs political and steering tasks in the fields of urban development and construction and housing, as well as carrying out general and regulatory tasks assigned by law. 

 

In particular, the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing is responsible for the topics of new housing construction and promotion, rent and tenant protection, urban development promotion, architecture and urban design, real estate policy and land-use planning, urban land-use planning and the supervision of the municipal housing associations.

 

Another of our overriding themes is joint regional planning at the interface between Berlin and Brandenburg. We prepare and provide geoinformation and geodata. Our construction section creates public buildings for the purposes of culture, science, education, sports and justice. Architectural and open space competitions are organised in our administration. The urban development administration includes the supreme building inspectorate, which is in charge of selected building permit procedures and is responsible for the building regulations of the state of Berlin.

 

The planning concepts of our department focus on projects of both large and small scale. Thus, the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing is in charge of developing strategic frameworks such as the Urban Development Plans for Housing, for Centres and for Industry and Trade, as well as individual development plans and concepts for Berlin's Mitte area, its City West and the follow-up use of Tegel Airport. 

 

The increasing demand for new apartments, which has accompanied Berlin's enormous growth in recent years, presents the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing with a major challenge.
